Sunstar Cannon Turret

Description

This is the SUNSTAR Cannon Turret, the primary weapon's battery for the GALAXIUS CLASS Battlecarrier.

As displayed, each turret has two barrels, slaved together or firing independantly in cycles.
The maximum elevation as shown is forty degrees, while the gun can depress as far as five degrees for lower plane shots. This is a rather narrow field when you consider the area being fired in is space. However, this is solved simply by rolling the ship. this could have been avoided by putting the elevation pivot further back, but some sacrifice was wanted for increasing the tracking rate of the barrels during live combat, so the pivot is more towards their center.

Each Barrel is capable of delivering a fantastic destructive yield of one-hundred megatons in a single Full Power Shot. When cycled as firing together, this is a single shot yield of 200 Megatons per shot. The Sunstar system also has a rate of Fire of 1 shot every 1.5 seconds, and in ten seconds, the turret can deliver 1.4 GIGATONS of destructive power.
The ship has ten of these turrets, however their spacing means a maximum of six can be alligned for broadside bombardment tactics at any given time. Meaning 1.2 gigatons in a single broadside, or 8.4 Gigatons during a ten second salvo. (In which seven shots are fired.) It would take 19 minutes and thirty-five seconds at this rate to deliver a teraton, or the same energy as a 2 km rocky meteorite impacting at ~55,000 mph.

This is sustainable because the Galaxius Class Battlecarrier operates on two Zeropoint Reactor Cores, essentially providing unlimited power only restricted by the power distribution network, and cooling systems. The other limitation is the capacity of the cannons themselves. They COULD be set to operate at higher yields, but that overrides the safety limit and there's a chance they could simply self destruct from strain as the yield is increased over the safety threshhold.

(( To calculate the yield, I actually went to work on calculating the destructive force required to, for all intents and purposes, ERASE, a location known as ATAMI CITY, just south of Tokyo. A city roughly three miles across tucked into a valley. I used the Nuclear Weapons Effects Calculator here: [link] - to find the estimated yield. A safe bet was that anything caught in the fireball was as good as erased. 200 MT came out to a ground contact-airburst size of 5.8 km, which was close enough for government work in my oppinion.))

(( For clarification, Atami City is chosen because it is the location of an incident which almost results in a Code Zeus... or full scale orbital strike. **Well, it DOES result in a Code Zeus, but circumstances prevent the total eradication of the city and the death of no doubt MILLIONS in nearby Tokyo.** In which I wrote dialogue that explicitly states just what is about to happen:

--
Tech: She just rebooted the entire system network. All erranious traffic is cleared... Wait... She's accessed fire control, main system control has been interrupted, emergency combat protocalls... !!! Primary Turret Three just went hot!

Tech: Targetting sensors active, she's processing a firing solution! I'm registering sunstar three at full power targetting... OH SHIT! Accessing planetary GPS grid! Japan, Honshu, Shizuoka, Atami City...

Paul: My god... she wouldn't- Stop her! At that setting she'll blow that city right off the planet!

--

Thomas: No! Help me with a barrier!

Samuel: Are you DAFT?! We need to run! This spot's about to get-

Thomas: EVERYWHERE is about to get hit! There's no place to run!

Just out of curiosity, how big did you design your "Galaxius" ship to be? Also, aside from combat, does it have any other roles?

It's interesting to design ships, even if they may never exist in reality. My fictional ship design (depicted in my avatar), for example, is designed to be for peaceful scientific exploration; it's only 50 meters long and aside from a shield and a possible electromagnetic-acceleration gun (which is used mainly for launching stuff), it has no weapons. If it ever was built, I don't think I'd use it for combat. ^^;

Anywhoo, your gallery has a good start; you have a good imagination. :meditation:
